NHS pay in Wales

NHS Wales runs its own Agenda for Change contract, with pay awards agreed by the Welsh Government. While the pay points can differ slightly from England, the tax treatment is the same: the Welsh Rate of Income Tax is currently set to match the rest of the UK, so 20%, 40% and 45% bands apply above the £12,570 Personal Allowance.

That means your NHS Wales take-home pay is worked out exactly as it is in England — Income Tax, 8%/2% National Insurance, your NHS pension and any student loan.

Frequently asked questions

Is NHS pay different in Wales?
NHS Wales has its own Agenda for Change pay scales, negotiated by the Welsh Government, which can differ slightly from England. Income Tax, however, is set at the same rates as England and Northern Ireland.
What is the Welsh Rate of Income Tax?
Income Tax is partly devolved to Wales, but the Welsh Government has kept the Welsh Rate of Income Tax aligned with England, so the bands and rates are identical. Your take-home pay is calculated the same way as in England.
Does the NHS pension apply in Wales?
Yes. NHS staff in Wales are members of the NHS Pension Scheme with the same tiered contribution rates. Add your rate under Advanced options.
